Is the Fed. sorting-out copper pennies?

This topic comes from another site, but have any of you heard that the Fed. is sorting-out of circulation copper pennies with high volumn machines?

I would think that the US Mint or the Treasury would be the ones to do that, if it were to be done?

I hope this isn't true. Ardent, please give us a link or some more information if you have it.

Going off topic here but, did you guys see any 2006 nickels in circulation ? I've only got one in change and i kept it. Been waiting 5 months now and still haven't seen another one.

Also, do you think 2007 nickels will still be made 25/75% nickel and copper ?

I doubt this: the gummint is too stupid to think this far ahead, and it's early yet. At 2 cents of copper per penny, you're still in the hole due to sorting and energy costs once you've separated out and melted the older ones.

I also doubt that a significant number of individuals are sorting out the pre-'82 pennies yet.

Why go to all the hassle with pennies? I think pulling Nickels out of circulation would be much easier. I have been seeing tons of 2006 Nickels here in Vegas. I have a weird feeling that these new pennies and nickels I have been seeing are thinner. Maybe I am wrong but I feel like something is different with them.

I noticed this yesterday on a new commemorative nickel. The rim felt taller which made me think that the field was actually thinner. Anyone know if the nickel got shaved?

Whoa!, everyone. I got this infomation via an email from a penney pinching friend who says he has connections within the Treasury Dept. I have no way of knowing if his information is correct or not. That is why I posted this in the form of a question. If it is true, I would expect that at least some of you might have heard about it. I posted this same topic on another forum that is devoted only to the penney & nickel hoarders. I will post the address of the forum only if it is o.k. with the administration. (And I don't mean the Bush administration)

At any rate I want to say that I believe that time is a wasting if you are not making a serious effort to obtain copper (and maybe even zinc) pennies and/or nickels. Sorting through your spare change by hand may be a nice hobby but you might (or might not) wish you had taken more aggressive measures in the future.

I know Sporlan only through this site. I'm only buying nickels now because I don't have a sorting machine. There is much more quick profit to be obtained with the pre- 82 penney. It is like having an machine that will double your money as it runs. I want to push him to find a way to market this machine or it's information to the public. Maybe this topic will do that.

Yes the Fed is stupid, but I feel it is even more stupid (no offense to anyone please) for us not to take every measure to obtain our share of this mountain of wealth that can be bought at its face value.

Sorry about the confusion. No I meant if only 25% of all the pennies currently in circulation were copper. Of course your findings show that the percent is currently much higher.
